Today in class we learned how to evaluate a website. We went through the ten steps for user interface design. We completed a task on evaluating an email software application of our choice.

User Centered Design

In class today we looked into the process of designing a product where the intended users are involved throughout the design cycle. There are many models for a system life-cycle, we took down some examples of how a design life-cycle would look like. Then we looked at usability goals - user characteristics - environment - tasks - workflow and we learned the advantages of how using each one would benefit a user centered design. Some workflow tasks followed where we learned the step by step natural process of how a workflow helps you to complete a task or a process.
After lunch we discussed how stakeholders are apart of a product and how they all are linked directly  or indirectly. We were given some examples and then we had to complete a task where we had to identify the stakeholders in a Chocolate bar, newspaper and a local gym.
Next we did some work on a questionnaire. We had to make our own questionnaire about Orange Inc. mobile phone company. Finally we took a test on user perception that i found interesting. I will put the link up on this post.http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/body/interactives/senseschallenge/

Review and assessment week.

This week was review and assessment week in multimedia. We had to complete an assignment and hand it in before 1pm today which is 24/11/2011. The assignment was to produce your very own storyboard for a video advertisement for a brand new washing powder.

Today in class we analysed Bad designs. We looked up http://www.baddesigns.com/index.html
It is a website that shows and points out Bad Designs in everyday life for example anything from a tin of food to a car parking permit machine. It gives an explanation from people who experienced these bad designs first hand and they give their own ideas on what the solutions should be. In some cases the people themselves were at fault for not reading simple instructions properly. In other cases it came down to very bad or lack of design solutions from the manufacturers.

Music Video

Today we made our own music video in Windows Live Video Maker. I really enjoyed this task as it was my first time using the programme. I chose the song Golden Brown by the Stranglers. I have uploaded the video with this post.

Today in class we evaluated numerous websites. We had to describe each website, identify the target audience of the website and list good points and bad points on the design features of the website.
We also did a group task where we had to design a newspaper ad for Raven View Guesthouse.

Design

Today we learned about the types of design/designers . We learned all designs/designers are different but at the same time are related.

We also covered the element of design : shape, space, colour, line, texture, value. Then we went into the principles of design that are contrast, balance, pattern, emphasis, unity, movement and rhythm.

For the second half of the day we completed three tasks which I will post up on another date.
